Background
Lansbury Voices is a community project supported by poplar HARCA who is a registered Social Landlord, which is based in Poplar East London. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month (for management meetings & project Development) in the Lansbury Neighbourhood Center No. 20 Alton Street in the IT Suite from 10-12 midday, or 6:30-8:30 PM (Monthly).
As well as holding monthly meeting we also run various community projects which focus on the historical and social development of the Lansbury Estate. Our current project is the Lansbury Voices Freedom DVD Project.
How did it all begin
On 8th March, 2006, Vicky our project manager contacted us to discuss the idea of a DVD project. We discussed that we would like to do a project about the women in our community. We discussed choices. We discussed and explored the idea, why with so many choices women still did not seem to progress, and were generally paid 20% less than men for the same type of employment.
As part of the project we decided to ask questions.....are women really free? Do they feel free? Is it to do with poor economics? Are young girls feeling that the only way to express themselves, and feel love is to have children? Is our society sending out the wrong message? Are celebrities going along with this idea? Vicky introduced the group to two graduate students studing at Goldsmiths university they had the experience in graphic design and photo journilism and they were ther to help us construct a short film and with all the techinical support for the developmet of the film.
Interviewing in Chrisp Street Market
On Saturday, 6th May 2006, we went to Chrisp Street Market and asked women about what FREEDOM means to them. We asked them a series of questions on this subject.
- What does freedom mean to you?
- What place represents freedom to you?
- At what time in your life did you most feel free?
- Name a barrier to freedom on the estate for women?
- Are women more free now than before?
- Do you feel free?
The replies we got were very different and far from what we expected. We as WOMEN don't usually think about things like this.
Project Development
We started the sesions discussing and exploring methods of collecting material that could be used for the development of a short film.
we discussed theames and topics, we loked at issues raied from living on the estate.
we devised a set of questions that would be asked to our audience that we hope would be thought provoking.
we worked together on interviewing techniques.
we advertised the open workshop session locally, and planed the open workshop session for staurday the 6th May 2006 in chrisp Market.
at further workshop sessions held each wednesday evenings we looked throught all the material we had generated form the open workshop session held in chrisp street market.
from the images collected we chose three main topics. There were three issues consistintly rasied, they were: what images represent freedom to you, barriers to freedom & safety issues.
we looked at the images we had collected, and planed the storyboard.
the storyboard was split into three parts :
1. introduction
2.barriers to freedom
3.do women feel free?
after we had agreed the storybaord and identfied the images & video material we wanted to use we followed the same process with the audio material.
Again we listern to all the material we had generated form interviewing women at the open workshop held in chrisp street market. we choose interviews which had a common theam, we then divided them up into subject catogaries.
the students then took all the material and out ideas away and did the editing for us.
they regualy brought back to us rough cuts, making any changes we wanted.
it was great watching the changes and defining all of the material until we were happy with the final version.
at our last session they played us the final version, It was Great......
